Events

Each year, there are events held in the magnificent nature of Kamikochi. This year’s lineup is listed below and includes festivals, ceremonies, and field trips.

  • Kamikochi Opening Festival

  • Hotaka Shrine Boat Festival

Held annually at Myojin Pond, the Boat Festival's main ceremony is actually performed on boats sailing across the pond itself. Prayers are offered in thanks for safe passage through the mountains and traditional Japanese music is played live. For anyone looking to mix a bit of culture into their visit to Kamikochi, it offers a Shinto ritual with a uniquely local flavor. The event also strikes an elegant balance between formal ceremony and the colorful pageantry on display in the decorative boats and the clothing of the participants.

    Location: Myojin Pond

    Date: October 8

    Start Time: 11:00 a.m.

  • Kamikochi Closing Ceremony

This ceremony takes place every year in the vicinity of Kappa Bridge with the backing of the freshly snow-covered Hotaka mountain range. At Hotaka Shrine, a Shinto ritual is held to show appreciation towards nature and the safety of this season, as well as pray for the safety and prosperity in the mountains next season. Sacred sake is offered to the Azusa River and served to participants. This closing ceremony takes place on the last day of the season, marking the start of Kamikochi`s winter rest until mid-April the following year.
