A Kaleidoscope of Color

Oct. 22, 2024[Nature & Wildlife, Flora, Autumn]

A hearty hello to all of our loyal readers around the globe!

As you've no doubt heard, the hotly anticipated autumn foliage season is finally here. Accordingly, throngs of visitors have been girding themselves against the chilly temperatures and making their way to Kamikochi to take in the scenery. As I write, the maple trees are displaying bold reds, yellows, and oranges with the larches next in line to hit peak color.

We thought we'd share a few pictures from the past week. And before we forget, a big thanks to Five Sense blogger, Fu-ta, for making these images available along with some helpful explanation!

At the top of the page, you can see species of both Acer micranthum (small-leaved maple) and the acer japonicum (fullmoon maple), on the left and right, respectively. When standing side by side, as in this picture, they present a bold contrast which is very photo-friendly.

From there, we move on to the redvein maple or urihada keade as it's know in Japanese. This variety of maple is noted for it's broad, five pointed leaves and rich hues of yellow:

Next, we turn our gaze to the katsura, whose scientific name, cercidiphyllum japonicum, is a bit of a mouthful. The katsura is know for emitting a faint, caramel-like scent during the autumn, which only adds to its charm.

If you're still reading this post, you're wasting valuable time that you could be spending in Kamikochi. So why not head down and join the fun? Just remember to dress warmly as morning temperatures have lately been hovering around the freezing point. A sturdy down jacket and some warm gloves should see you through.

Thanks to all the hard working folks at Five Sense for their informative posts on the latest developments in Kamikochi.

Thanks all for now, folks. Join us next week for more updates on the autumn season. Till then, take care!
