Private cars are forbidden from entering throughout the year
Private cars (including motorcycles) are prohibited from entering Kamikochi to protect the precious natural environment and scenic beauty by reducing greenhouse gasses. Park your car at pay parking lots in Sawando or Hirayu and take a low-pollution shuttle bus or a taxi.
Take Route 158 from Matsumoto or Takayama to either Sawando Parking Area (closer to Matsumoto City – Nagano Prefecture) or Hirayu Parking Area (closer to Takayama City – Gifu Prefecture). Private cars or motorcycles are not allowed to enter Kamikochi, but there are parking areas near the entrance of Kamikochi, Sawando and Hirayu, and they typically cost ¥700 and ¥600 per day. From the parking areas, you can access Kamikochi in about 20 – 30 minutes by bus or taxi. You can purchase round-trip bus tickets from Sawando and Hirayu Bus Terminals.
